In contrast to a time in Catholic Ireland when nudity was a profound taboo, naturists are now greeted with a blend of smiles and high fives while hiking naked in Wicklow.
That’s according to Derek Keogh from the Irish Naturist Association, who is organising a naked hike this weekend ahead of World Hiking Day.
Up to 20 people are expected to embark on the hike, which covers Ravens Rock located in the Wicklow Mountains, along with Prince William’s Seat and Knocknagun this Saturday.
It will be one of many events taking place around the world to mark World Hiking Day on Sunday. For many, the event will be a reminder of how far Ireland has come since the Irish Naturist Association was formed in 1966.
“We still have people who remember what it was like before,” Derek told the Irish Examiner. “They paved the way for what we take for granted today. We still like to put a sign up telling people that we are going to be in a place but obviously you can’t cover the mountains.
"The typical reaction we get from people we meet along the way is a smile or look of amusement. You occasionally get high fives from people. Some will say “fair play” while at the same admitting that naturism wouldn’t be for them."
He said the organisation was celebrating 60 years in existence and now has 800 members...
